Progesterone is one of those miracle molecules and one I often recommend in my natural weight loss and hormonal balance-seeking clients. It may also be a staple in first-aid kits in the future.
Recent studies are suggesting that progesterone may have a protective effect on the brain that could be especially useful in event of traumatic brain injury (TBI) or concussion. It may be an fact of life that the same hormonal factors that make males more prone to TBI are the same that make TBI such a dangerous injury to experience.
The studies initially found a discrepency in the effects of TBI among male, female and pregnant female mice. With this information researchers were able to narrow down a very likely candidate for the protective factor: progesterone.
Trials currently underway are looking to validate the effect and measure its efficacy and safety. I look forward to the day that natural progesterone will be a staple in the household for hormonal, and now perhaps trauma-inflicted, health.
