Costochondritis – Cause and Treatment

The important take-away message from this video is that costochondritis is not some mysterious condition but a very real, and often painful, manifestation of alignment problems of the ribs and sternum.

Common considerations…

  • Costochondritis is often mistaken for a fracture, heart, or lung problem initially.
  • Costochondritis will not show up on an x-ray or blood test.
  • Costochondritis can easily be diagnosed by a practitioner that is very experienced at palpation.
  • We regularly enjoy great success in helping people recover from the symptoms of costochondritis.

Looking at the image above you can see that the rib cage is composed of 12 ribs on each side, the spine supporting it from the back, the sternum in front and cartilage (in white) anteriorly. The junction between any of these parts can become a source of pain if alignment is compromised!

Common causes of misalignment in this part of the spine are:

  • Poor posture
  • Trauma
  • Scoliosis or spinal curvature
  • Compression as from a purse on the shoulder or leaning on the edge of a couch
  • Coughing, sneezing or other rapid forces
  • Etc…

It is important that in treatment the rib cage is considered as a whole! This means that all components of the rib cage and relevant spinal areas need to be assessed and addressed for complete and lasting relief!
